Freelance Writer Jobs - Goal Setting And How To Follow Through
Ghost writers who work at home have a major challenge before them - it's not only how to GET the jobs, but how to actually follow through and finish them. This is a major challenge for anybody who works for themselves.
If you're reading this, you probably don't need to be reminded of all the perks of freelance writing. Your own schedule, no boss, working in pajamas, etc. Now, here's the huge downside - deadlines.
Deadlines are especially tough on us ghost writers because we are by nature procrastinators. It must be something about people who love to work with words, that we love to save it until the last minute. And also as naturally artistic types, we're terrible at organizing.
Now, I'm not going to turn Tony Robbins on you here, but it's a fact that anyone who is successful in any walk of life does it by setting goals. Goals help you decide how much to do and by when. When you're stacking up freelance writing jobs, having goals is the only way to get on top of things.
Another good thing about goals is that they keep you from giving up. You can kind of see the light at the end of the tunnel. It may be WAY down and maybe you can't see it very well, but it's there and this helps. They can make things seem less overwhelming.
I think everybody has a goal setting strategy that works for them, but here's basically what I do. First, I break the job up into little chunks, like "milestones." Meeting each goal along the way gives you a feeling of confidence that you can finish the rest.
Often, I actually schedule exactly when I'm going to do things. Usually, I go back and change them. Hence, it is meaningless. But I think that this scheduling and rescheduling helps me mentally to stay on task. Maybe not, who knows?
Now, let's say I've got a bunch of fat, juicy writing jobs all lined up into next month. What I'll do is go ahead and start on each one. Writing that first article helps me psychologically, like I've opened the job. If I don't do that, sometimes I feel like it's some great unknown mysterious creature of the deep, lurking there at the edge of my consciousness intimidating me.
Finally, I make a Plan Of Attack for each job. If it's just 10 articles on something-or-other, there's no need really. The plan is write one, then another, then another, etc. But if it's something that has some steps, I write them out and call this the job's "flow." This helps me again by setting some smallish goals to work through that get me to the big one - job completion.
I hope this helps, but basically you're ultimately on your own to develop a plan that works for you. The main thing is that you have to become pretty goal focused to finish your freelance writer jobs. I'm the least goal-oriented person by nature, so if I can do it, anybody can!

Jobs as a writer I can do to earn a income?
and I do not mean write fiction and play the big time like Steven King.
I mean like tech writer, columnist and whatever side jobs I could do on a regular basis in order to supplement my income? I'd like at least 600 to 3000 a month and would be nice to do this.
And what would it take and how long would it take for me to earn a regular income on such projects?
What you are talking about is becoming a freelance writer. It is not an easy thing to do. Deadlines must be met precisely. Your reputation will make or break you. You can start with a copy of Writers Market. There are many magazines buying articles listed in the back. Usually you have to send them a proposal first and they will let you know if they wish to hire you and how many words they want. Again, you must be precise. You can also spend time in the library with a copy of Literary Marketplace in the research section making notes. There are also free lance jobs listed at Absolute Write Water Cooler, Writers Wall, Writers Weekly and many other writing sites. Learn how to write a professional proposal and a great query letter. Remember with this kind of writing research is essential. You cannot make this stuff up. So when you get a deadline - allow for plenty of time to research. You must keep careful notations in a log book and be prepared to back up everything you write. There are many articles online regarding how to be a free lance writer.
The other option is what I do. I ghost write part time for a very well known sports figure. I write children's books for him. The money is very lucrative, but they are dream jobs that you just fall into. They don't come around every day. Ghosting for this guy is an amazing experience. I also have another ghost job sitting here for another but I don't even know when I will be able to begin it. The sport star is keeping me quite busy and I absolutely insist on still being able to put in my 4 hours on my own project daily as well.
The best answer is to surf the net and read all you can. Learn from people who are successful at doing it. There are many people making that kind of money free lancing, but they have learned their craft and put in their hours and paid their dues.
There are also businesses that hire their own tech writers full time. Check the big Sunday papers. There are listings for tech writers always. Catalog writing, instruction manuals, Material safety sheets, brochures, prospectuses, memos, stockholder letters ... all of those things have to be written by someone. It could be you.
