The TV of Tomorrow

Today the TV is mostly used to get all kinds of information but actually there are many possibilities to use it in a different way. Of course all of them are at some point related to getting information, but still they really open new horizons for the good old box with moving pictures.

First of all your TV can become a great helper in a so called smart house or the house of tomorrow. It can be tied to everything around the house and display all kinds of information. And if the set happens to be interactive (and sets used in smart houses most definitely are) you can even interact with the house without leaving the sofa. Imagine following: you get up in the morning, check the weather on your TV and then pick clothing out of your wardrobe that will suit the weather. With help of system like Kinect (interactive controller for xBox that scans the body and allows to control the on-screen action with usual movements) you can even check how the clothing will look on you. So practically the smart house and interactive TV do a great job of helping you with your everyday tasks. I don't even mention stuff like ordering a coffee while you sit in front of the telly or turning the air conditioner on with help of a special house menu.

All of these features are tied to one thing – interactivity. Today when digital television is really becoming global interactivity has great perspectives and can bring the television up to a whole new level. The key difference of the analog television lies in the ability of the viewer to control the broadcast and chose what he or she wants to watch. The viewer will be able to see all the previously aired shows, have access to different cameras, be able to pause the broadcasting, to record it or to switch off the advertising. And even more as soon as the technology will become global and widespread. Interactivity is even more than promising technology and there is no doubts that it will eventually dominate the market.

Of course a lot of experts say that interactive television will be the end of analogue television, but in this case an important factor is often left out. Today humanity is for the first time in its history facing an informational overflow. The overall amount of info created by the television channels and internet is way too much to see all of it. A usual viewer will just drown in variety of channels, which once again brings up a need for a certain group of people that will pre-select the information. This of course a step back for interactivity nevertheless this will be definitely chosen by most of the casual viewers because it simply saves time. Another solution are similarity playlists and pre-selected playlists. For example compile a list of most popular sci-fi shows or tie the whole broadcasting network into on system and recommend the viewers shows that are viewed by people with similar playlists.
