A Look At Some Different Types Of Essential Items Of Fire Fighting Equipment
Fire fighting equipment in the hands of trained fire fighting personnel can prove to be the best tools to help in controlling and putting out a fire. There are several different items of equipment that the fire fighters must have including items like a fire truck, pike poles and a halligan bar, to name but a few.
A fire truck is an important item of fire fighting equipment and its basic function is to help in pumping water with the help of its engine which connects to the water contained in the vehicle. Besides the fire truck, fire fighters also need a ladder that is a very important tool that can help in putting out a fire. A ladder can prove to be a great tool for putting out fires that have broke out high up in an apartment or hotel or even in a school building.
Pike poles are essential items for a fire fighter and these are about 6 and 10 feet long and are used by a fire fighter to search out fires that may have broken out behind a sheetrock in a wall or ceiling. Pike poles are normally made from fiberglass and have hooks (made out of metal) on their ends.
A halligan bar is required by the fire fighter to help with fire and rescue services. This is a multipurpose tool that helps to pry, twist, punch and strike and is made up of a claw and blade as well as a tapering pick which provides excellent use in helping to quickly force open different types of locked/jammed doors.
A fire extinguisher is essential for all fire fighting jobs and is especially useful in helping to put out small sized fires such as kitchen fires. Air monitoring meters are other essential items of fire fighting equipment that help in measuring carbon monoxide content in the air as well as amount of oxygen in the air.
Other than these items, fire fighters also need to use items such as fire alarm control panels that are located in the fire station. These items of equipment help in fighting and putting out fires by announcing the location of places where a fire has broken out.
A hydrant wrench is also an essential tool that helps fire fighters in opening the valves of fire hydrants. Another important tool, the Jaws of Life is an item of fire fighting equipment that every fire fighter needs to carry. These are heavy duty emergency cutters that help in cutting open doors, especially car doors that become jammed following an auto accident. With this tool it is easy to cut open the car door and extract the driver or passengers in the car.
These are a fair sampling of essential items of fire fighting equipment that every fire fighter needs. These items can prove to useful in a number of ways and do more than just help the fire fighter in controlling and putting out a fire because they are also very useful in helping to rescue victims of fire as well.
