Things to Consider When Choosing A Family Tree Format

There are many different family tree formats available to a beginner genealogist.  It can be confusing to know which one is right for you.  Here is a list of five key things to consider when selecting your family tree format.

First and foremost is cost.  Knowing how much you can afford will tend to affect the way you decide to format your family tree.  Given that times are tough for many people, cost may be a factor for you.  But, don't let the fear of cost stop you from pursuing your genealogy hobby.  There are many, many sources of free family trees online.  Just do a quick search and you will find many to choose from.  Look for sites that offer a free downloadable blank family tree.

Secondly, you must consider how you will want to present your family tree and how it will be used.  If it is a working or draft family tree, then a free print out is great.  But if you want something to really showcase all your data, then you may be looking at something more formal.  This could mean beautiful chart hung on a wall, a family tree scrapbook for your coffee table or even a family tree digital video.  Will portability be an issue?  Will you want to give it as a gift?

Thirdly, you will need to decide if you want to do this yourself or hire a professional.  The advantages of doing things yourself are that you get to enjoy the process more.  You'll be able to infuse your personality into the project and that can be a lot more satisfying than just hiring someone to do the job for you.  Of course, many people have neither the time nor the skills to do some types of projects themselves.  In those cases, hiring a professional is clearly the better choice.  An example of such a time, would be trying to get old films onto a digital family tree - not a task for most people are up to!

You will also want to give some thought to your personal taste or style.  Don't get an extremely ornate family tree plaque made up if you tastes run to the more simple design. Similarly, don't let a professional design a noisy, flashy family tree digital video if your taste tends to elegant quiet.  You are investing a lot of your resources into a final family tree and it will become a family heirloom so you will want something that you know you will be happy with in the long term.

Finally, there is complexity.  How much information or how many generations will you want to display?  Three and four generation pedigree charts are the most common choice, but if you are compiling many generations with many branches, then the ahnentafel chart may be a better choice because its numbering system.

If you pause to think about these five factors before you choose how to showcase all your hard work, I am certain you will be happier with the final outcome!

What's the difference between an Auditor and a charted accountant in the UK?

I'm just interested because I have an uncle on my dad's side who's an auditor and an auntie on my mum's side who's a chartered accountant.
What's the difference.. because my uncle always seems to be inferring that his job is better than her's at family occasions when they are all there. Like yesterday for example.

Thanks in Advance :)

A chartered Accountant is a person trained in accountancy and has passed examinations in order to practise as an Accountant. The fact that they have passed the exams allows them to examine and report on the accounts of a limited company. If required by law or the directors of the company they may issue a report or an audit certificate, which states their independent opinion of the accounts prepared and the state of the company, particularly in relation to the financial stability of the company.

So therefore, to audit a company's accounts you need to be a qualified accountant. However the Institute of Chartered Accountants, although the oldest body, is not the only body licensed by the authorities to allow its members to audit accounts. There are many others. Traditionally, the members of the Chartered Institute like to look down on the other bodies although nowadays it is tongue in cheek. All bodies exact high standards and monitor their respective members very strictly.

You will appreciate that the above is a very simplified answer, but I hope that it is helpful.

Working in a family practice medical office

I work in a busy family practice that sees alot of children. In any given day, we can see upwards to one hundred and fifty children. I am in charge of entering their insurance and making sure their address and phone number hasn't changed. I can tell you that during cold and flu season, it can get pretty busy. I like the fast pace and the variety of never knowing what to expect. We get children who have stuck things up their nose, swallowed any number of strange things, children who have stuck things in their ears. It is never boring. People always want to know what it is like to work for a doctor. Well, let me tell you, it can be interesting. I work for two family practice doctors, one internal medicine, and one CRNP. Each one has a different personality. While the internal medicine doctor has a very slow pace, the family practice doctors tend to have a very fast pace. The CRNP is somewhere in the middle. She likes to give her own shots and spend a lot of time with each patient. She is a wonderful person to work for. She really cares about each patient she sees. The internal medicine doctor also spends a lot of time with each patient. His patients require a lot of time because they tend to have more complicated problems. He sees a lot of heart patients and patients that have multiple medical problems. Most of his patients have to be reffered out to other doctors. The two family practice doctors see alot of children along with adults. They have to do a alot of vaccines and physicals for school. They move at a very fast pace. They demand alot from their staff. You must be fast and accurate. There is little room for error. All shots must be logged and notated in the chart. They must be kept a a certain tempature at all times. These have to be checked several times a day. Although these doctors tend to get them in and out in a hurry, there still has to be accurate records kept. Working in this enviorment is not easy for some people. You must have thick skin, because the doctors tend to get upset if patients have to wait. I really enjoy the challenge. Don't expect to learn these skills in college. These are skills that only come with experience. No matter how much you read about something, until you actually do it you are not going to know the correct way. A good, fast and well qualified medical assistant is a very rare find. If you are looking for a challenging, fast paced carreer, then prehaps working in a family practice medical office is for you. Be prepared for long hours, but at the end of the day, its worth it!
