Simple Guidelines to Replacement Windows

It is a big decision to many homeowners when their house is in need of replacement windows. The cost of such task is quite costly, takes a lot of time and also effort to complete. This article aims to help you in your window replacement project.

The first thing you need to know about replacing your windows is to find out when you really need to take the window issue seriously. Poorly installed windows or old ones can actually cost you more money over the years as compared to installing brand new windows. You are able to reduce the bills on your monthly heating and cooling with new windows. They are also wonderful as they help to increase your home’s resale value and security of your home.

There are signs that your home is really in need of the replacement window job. These include peeling paint that reveals water damaged wood, fading in the nearby carpet or furniture, drafts from closes windows, noises from outside that can be heard strong inside and very high all year-round energy bills.

Keep in mind that materials used in your existing window frames can also be damaging to your home. Aluminum window frames are prone to getting colder than the surrounding air, triggering condensation around your windows. Build-up of condensation is detrimental to your windows eventually. Long term effects are wood rots and water leaks into the surrounding wall. This type of damage is costly as you will have to replace not only the windows but surrounding structure as well.

Choosing the right material and style for your substitution is a difficult decision to make. The total cost depends on the type of glass used, energy efficiency, frame materials, warranty and style. Four basic materials are aluminum, steels, vinyl and wood. Wood is the biggest benefit for wood frame windows, but it is high-maintenance. Vinyl is durable with no maintenance required. Aluminum is a poor choice due to the condensation factor. On the other hand steel is versatile, but is very costly.

By following these guidelines, either by using a do-it-yourself method or having a professional to get new replacement windows, you are off in the right track.

How do I set my printer to save print jobs until I am ready to print them, in windows xp?

Hello, I want to know a way to have print jobs show up in some sort of queue, and then hold the printing jobs until I specify to print. Currently, I am asked how many pages and print preference, but I am given no option to save the job for later. The printing is immediate. There is a setting called 'print to file' but I cant get it to save anything for me. I have searched windows knowledge base but I didn't find anything useful. I don't think this is a complicated task, I just cant seem to find the settings to make it possible. I have xp home and a lexmark z705 printer. Thanks for your help, K

Yes you can set-up a print queue in Windows XP. One of the ways is to pause the printer (as already mentioned) in the control panel. Windows XP has a great HELP option in the start button. Click on start button/select help and support/search print queue. The information that will list will allow you to set your printer up successfully for a print queue and also tell you how you can select a document for priority printing etc.

There are other types of print queues but they are control by specialized software in which are way to expensive for the non-industrial user.

Vinyl Replacement Windows: What do they cost?

here at my consulting company, we often get asked the basic question, "what should an average vinyl replacement window cost?" This is not always such an easy question to answer! But I do realize that the typical answers you find on the internet try to avoid answering with a price.  The fact is, a vinyl replacement window is bought from a manufacturer at a dealer cost of generally between $70 - $250.  This DOES NOT mean that you will be able to buy the window for this amount, because companies need to make a profit.

How a window is priced is not so much what brand or quality, but more so the size and profitability of the company selling it.

Let's take into consideration what a private contract needs to build into the price versus a larger remodeling company with salespeople, and an office.

Private Contractor Pricing

Window cost (lumber yard or retail store)  $120 each

extension jambs/shims                           $8 each

insulation (foam or fiberglass)                  $5 each

Labor                                                    $65 each

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Gas  (give estimate, pick up windows)     $50 per job

Dispose of old windows                          $20 per job

Coil stock for outside trim                       $90 per job

cover overhead                                       $50 per job

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

So our private contractor probably needs to charge roughly $200 plus tax just to cover materials and labor, but also needs to price in enough to cover the time to give the estimate, the trips to pick up the windows, do the exterior trim, and cover expenses like contract forms, invoicing paperwork etc...

Also keep in mind that if a contractor breaks a new window, it cannot be returned so smart contractors typically build some "insurance" into the price as well.

Now add sales tax to this job, and also keep in mind that these costs just cover the labor and materials, not a profit (which too many contractors actually do not make enough profits so they go out of business frequently).  A typical profit markup would be at least 20%

If you were to say buy 10 windows from this private contractor, fair pricing would be approximately $2900 or $290 per window installed.

Now lets take a look at a remodeling company

Remodeling Company Pricing

Window Cost  (high quality custom built)    $200

Extension jambs, interior stops                  $9

Labor                                                       $75

Sales commissions                                  $40

insulation/caulk                                        $10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cover costs for materials list, and estimate  $100 per job

Cost for lead generation (marketing)          $200 per job

Cover insurance, workers comp, licensing  $100 per job

Overhead (full office staff, rent, phones, etc)  $300 per job

Company vehicles, loans, credit lines       $200

Profit Markup (generally 50% or higher)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our remodeling company now has to charge at least $6400 for the same 10 window job.

There are benefits to using a private contractor, namely a lower price.  The benefits of going with a remodeling company can often far outweigh the contractors low price selling point.

Should you choose the right remodeling company to complete your project, you may be offered attractive financing options, year round service, long warranties on both labor and materials, and sometimes a broader resource of industry knowledge.   Of course you must do your due diligence on your local contractors and companies, or use a service to help you out.  If you are going to be in your home a long time and want higher quality, full service, and long warranties then you should consider paying a little more in order to get back a ton.
