Any career advice for good steps with finding a job in the field of business analysis/data...?

...analysis/reporting analysis
I've got tech. skills such as advanced MS Access,Excel and intermediate SQL querying

I have 4 years working experience and 1 year of graduate school -- I'm currently looking for a job and could use any insight (especially if it's specific to LA/Southern California)

...so, you should have a variety of options open to you. High powered Excel skills are always valued. I don’t know as much about SQL. Most of the data analytics I have seen uses SAS or SPSS. Statistics is prized. If you haven’t degreed in it, that’s ok. Many companies will provide you with the requisite statistics training.

Possible industries include financial services, publishing, gaming, etc. I am sure the field of logistics also makes use of data analysis skills, although they may do more operations research than statistics. Yes, you read right...gaming. I am pretty sure Harrah’s in Las Vegas employs some downright sophisticated analytics to drive some of its decision making. Publishers use sophisticated analytics to aid them in optimizing marketing expenditure. And, financial services institutions like banks, credit card issuers, mortgage banks, etc. use sophisticated statistics-based analytics to support both marketing and credit/fraud risk management.

I don’t know whether you will relocate or not. I also don’t know what firms have openings right now. You’ll have to do some research. It can help by going to individual company websites. It can also help by going to software vendor websites like SAS or in your case SQL. Try to get customer lists and you will have a universe of users. If they don’t publish lists of their customers, search for conferences that they sponsor and get lists of attendees.

I am pretty sure Harrahs is in Vegas. SAS is in NC. But, I’ll bet they have consultants all over the US/world. SPSS and SQL, I don’t know. Credit card banks include American Express (NYC hdqtrs, but operations all over the place including AZ), Capital One (hdqtrs in Richmond/DC area), etc. Mortgage banks are all over the place. And, as you know, they are all over the news these days. They are all hurting badly and may not be doing much hiring. This will change and they will rebound; but, I don’t know if that will be in time for you. As you must know, CA dominates the morgage banking business. You will find no dearth of leading subprime mortgage banks in the LA area. The media has made subprime a dirty word. It isn’t if done right. But, as I said, they may not be doing a lot of hiring for a while. If you don’t want to work for a company directly, you can work for a consulting firm. There are many small analytics consulting firms. I am sure there are several in your area. Many may have operations in India or China. And, remember, SAS and SPSS probably have consultants that work with their clients (you are familiar with SQL; perhaps they are the same). Fair Isaacs is a household name in credit risk management. It used to have a consulting arm. And, it is no longer the only game in town. Take a look at a Texas firm called Austin Logistics.

One thing which will require some long range planning on your part is outsourcing. These data analysis functions have been successfully outsourced for many years now. Be sure to position yourself in a career and industry that will be around for a while. Simple data analysis--e.g., market research analysis--is often shifted offshore to India. I am sure you can identify the companies without too much difficulty. Over the last few years, even sophisticated risk analytics have been outsourced to India. There are definitely roles to be played here in the US. But, the SAS programmers, etc. are increasingly operating in teams overseas.

So, congratulations, I think you are in a growth industry segment. But, be smart about what role you prepare yourself for. Good luck!
