Skills Job Applications

Do you lie on job applications or in job interviews?

Do you omit criminal convictions, being fired, etc.? Do you add bogus job experience, skills or university degrees? You probably wouldn't admit it if you did, though. Hmmm.

I never lie on applications as that is grounds for firing, even years later. Not worth the risk

I have stretched the truth on my resume to get the interview and glossed over negatives at the interview. That is not lying, it is called being savvy about how to get a job.

Criminal convictions and university degrees are two of the easiest things to verify, definitely not worth lying if the company is good sized (if they have a dedicated HR person they probably run background checks). Smaller companies may not check, but I still wouldn't say I have a degree I don't have.

Resumes & Job Applications : What to Do After Filling Out a Job Application

What kind of job skills do I need to work at a craft store? (10 points)?

I'm 16 years old and looking for my first job. I've been filling out applications online and checking out job postings on snagajob when I saw a posting for Michael's (an arts and crafts store). What kind of special skills would I need to be a cashier at a craft store?

Being a cashier is more about organization and ability to work with money than it is about product knowledge. There should be people walking the floor that will help people with craft related questions. Cashiers need to be decent with math, great with money, and trustful. Highlight any background you have with dealing with money, your mathematical ability, and trustworthiness.

Also, learn how to smile while making and counting change. Yes, the register tells you how much to give back, but run some scenarios where you don't have the answer given to you. You'd be surprised how many young cashiers can't count change, they just hand it to you in a stack and dump some coins on top.

When counting change, start with the purchase price, then the change to bring you to the next dollar amount, and then the bills.

Purchase of 9.50, paid with a 20. Change is two fives and two quarters. You: "Ok so your total was 9.50, 50 cents makes 10, 15, and 20" This ability seems to have skipped over our generation and Michael's customers tend to be a little more old fashioned. Knowing how to count change, while it sounds simple, is amazing to set yourself apart from the line of other teenagers trying to get jobs.
