Is it okay to ask a hiring manager why they didn't offer an interview?
I've been applying for Java Developer jobs but haven't been getting the response I was hoping for. Most recently I didn't even get offered an interview for a position I was well suited for. My skills and experience fit in very well for the position and organization. I submitted a resume and cover letter and didn't get offered an interview.
I guess what I want to know is, is it okay to reply to the e-mail I got from their hiring manager and ask why they passed on me?
It could be that they had an internal candidate already picked and just posted the job for form. It could also be the fact that they received 150+ resumes within a day or two, and just took the first 50 to look over. Please remember that a lot of people are looking for work, and hiring managers get overwhelmed with responses. I would not advise asking her, as they probably just sent you a form letter of rejection and wouldn't be able to give a specific answer. In most cases, they wouldn't give you an answer anyway to protect themselves from possible discrimination complaints. Plus, it would probably annoy them. Just because you feel you would fit at a company doesn't mean you're entitled to their time. Drop it and move on. Good luck in your job search. FYI-companies cannot run a background check on you until they offer you a job.
