Cruise Ship Job Vacancies May Be Slipping Through Your Fingers! Here's Why
What are you doing to locate the best cruise ship job vacancies? Is your strategy working so far? If not, you may want to rethink your course of action. You may be interested to know that the vast majority of cruise line jobs are filled by word of mouth, or they're offered to proactive individuals who have already sent in their resume with cover letters to the cruise lines. In fact upwards of 97% of these jobs aren't even advertised online, or anywhere for that matter. This means, many opportunities may be slipping through your fingers without your knowledge
If all you've been doing is looking around online to find cruise ship employment, you're severely limiting your reach. These positions are often unique to a specific cruise line, and sometimes individual cruise ships. So they can fall under the radar pretty easily. If you keep in regular contact with a particular cruise line by taking the above approach and sending your resume to them every month or two, you'll more likely get noticed, and the cruise line will notice your persistence.
Cruise ship job fairs are another great way to find job vacancies. Many of the super liners like Norwegian or Carnival Cruise Lines frequently conduct job fairs. They are held in many locations around the world quite regularly. Actively attending these job fairs can land you a job rather quickly, especially if you connect well with one of the recruiters.
It's also very advisable to use a recruiting agency. Like most jobs in the travel industry, turnover is quite high due to the fact that many who work in the industry view working on a cruise ship as an "adventure" of sorts. So cruise ships are always on the lookout for employees to fill positions. Not only that, but cruise ship job agencies are often run by ex cruise workers, so they have contacts you certainly wouldn't have. This can be extremely useful if you play your cards right and impress the agency. Just make sure you're aware of all the fees (if any) that you'll need to pay the agency for their services.

Norwegian Cruise Line Employment?
So I have been invited to an Information/Interview Session with the Norwegian Cruise Line nex week. I truly want this job as ive been trying to get a job cooking on a cruise line for 6 months.
So a couple questions for anyone that may know. How many people usually attend these events (i.e. what kind of competition am I looking at?). How well do they treat their employees? Does anyone know what type of employee facilities (non bedroom i know that situation) are like?
And finally, are cooks ever allowed to get off the ship at the ports of call? I know typically the front of house staff have the opportunity but was unsure about cooks.
Thank you everyone in advance.
P.S. in case this question closes and someone has useful information my email is [email protected]
I don't have an answer about the interview session but I was an NCL employee for 2 yrs. I didn't work in the restaurant area but I saw what went on. I know the chefs and waiters worked long hours, as we all did. But I did see them get off the ship from time to time in different ports. You probably won't be able to get off at every port, every time but nobody can really do that. You will get a chance to see plenty of things while you are on board traveling to different destinations. Especially if you are on a ship that returns to the same ports. It seems like you are aware that you will be sharing a room with at least one other person, but up to 3 other people. There you get a fridge, tv, dvd player, small closet and shower, sink, toilet. On board there are also a crew gym, crew bar (with quite cheap drinks, $1 for a beer, a glass of wine etc), crew shop (where you can buy toiletries and snacks and drinks and also rent dvds and video games), and a crew mess. The crew welfare person also plans activities every month, karoake, trivia, theme crew parties with free drinks. there is normally something going on in the crew bar once a week. Either a special dj, or karoake.
I hope this helps out some. In my opinion its a great job. Most everything you need is provided for you and you are getting paid to travel around the world. I've been to alaska, through the panama canal, mexico, belize, honduras, bahamas, egypt, greece, turkey, spain, italy, malta, portugal, morrocco, las palmas, just to name a few.

Cruise Ship Job Opportunities
Cruise Line Companies came up with other ways to improve their service for new and old passengers who loves to take a cruise to relax and pamper themselves. As cruising is one of the fastest growing trend in tourism, the need for more cruise ships and crews is also climbing. But with this problematic economy, and the price tag a new cruise ship has, which is more or less a billion dollars, would it still be best to build new ships?
Well, most cruise companies have other solutions for this and that is to overhaul older vessels to make it look new for a fraction of the cost of building a new one. They've found out that renovating older ships are more financially sound for the company.
The cost of renovating a cruise ship is cheaper and faster than building a new one. Workers inspect, refurbish and repair ships from all of its sides and parts at a dry dock. It is a place where most people, even within the cruise industry has never seen. It may take hundreds of contractors to work alongside a cruise ship regular crew to work on a cruise ship that can take a few weeks to a few months.
Captain Hoyt, a pilot of Norwegian Spirit vessel, says that “The capital investment on one of this ships is enormous... Even if you have the money to build a new ship, the availability of shipyards and the delay in time for the construction for one of these is quite a bit”.
"The whole point is to keep the quality of the ship up and this is our opportunity here to to do all the upgrades that will bring us up to the premier level of the rest of the fleet."
"I think when the passengers come on, the overall impact will be that of a new ship," Hoyt said. "That's what were shooting for."
