Job Search HELP - need tips, etc.!!?
I live in MN but am not opposed to moving for the right job. I am 34, am employed as an office manager, and just graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Management. It seems the job market is horrible - any tips or suggestions? Not sure how or where to start looking. Also, should I start looking into options on getting a MBA? Not sure I can handle the additional debt or time that would take. Thanks!!
The job market is pretty bad, which is why you need a plan.
The one thing I don't see in your question is the type of job that you are looking for. (Or were you planning to stay an office manager?) It is really, really important to figure that out. As the old saying goes, you can't catch a rabbit unless you know what a rabbit looks like.
My advice would be to work for a year or two before you go back to get your MBA. Many new graduates panic when looking for a job, and decide to stay in school instead. It's the worst reason to get an advanced degree...as you noted, it just delays the problem, while racking up more debt.
Once you know exactly what type of job you are interested in, you can target companies and executive recruiters who specialize in that area.
Networking is also an excellent way to find a job. If you want to be a bricklayer, join the National Association of Bricklayers, and go to every event. Introduce yourself, and let everyone know you're looking for a job.
And also, of course, take full advantage of your college placement office, and attend all the job fairs and events that they host.
