How to Start a Nonprofit Organization

How do I start a non-profit organization for abused/battered women in California?

I want to start a shelter/ non-profit organization for women who are being abused/battered. This organization will do anything for these women and children, give them shelter, legal advice, finding jobs, consueling, getting them away from their abusive partners... I don't have much money, and I don't know where to start.

Honestly with little money and no knowledge, how will your venture succeed? Do you have a location? A lawyer? Funding sources? A strategic plan? The paperwork for starting a nonprofit is complicated, but it is the easiest part of the whole process.

Rather than start your own, why not find a local shelter, and offer to volunteer there for a while. This way you can help out, and learn how the shelter operates - where they get funding, staffing issues, accounting, legal issues, etc. There's a whole lot of 'stuff' involved in running any nonprofit, so gaining experience as a volunteer will help you as you help other people.

Good luck.
