5 Steps To Protect Yourself From Bombing Your Technical Interview

So you have a technical interview coming up? Anxious? I'm speaking about the 2nd interview all you smart IT guys and gals endure when it's time to step-up to the plate and have that sweet job working in your field. Don't worry. A technical interview may seem terrifying, it is comprised of two intimidating words (blank), but looking at this information will hopefully provide you with the backbone to survive the gauntlet otherwise known as a technical interview.

1. Just Relax- Did I say gauntlet? Simply kidding. While it sounds intense and daunting, a technical interview is simply test of your skills on the systems you'll work with. Just don't work yourself up over this particular whole thing. If you have the gravitas to get this far you certainly know the rudimentary basics. Still…

2. Know Exactly what You're Talking About- A technical interview is a test of your capabilities. Make sure you are experienced for this position in the first place. If you doctored up your resume or inflated your attributes a little too much then you definitely may very well be in trouble. You'll be provided with advanced warning of just what you'll be asked in the technical interview. Take those college cramming capabilities and put them to great use once again.

3. Don't hesitate to Tell the Truth- People seem to relate the phrases ‘I don't know' with being stupid. Confessing you don't know something isn't stupid, you're just expressing your lack of knowledge. Lack of knowledge may be fixed with some dose of training. Stupidity, however, is a lot more challenging to solve. Don't be stupid and wing yourself through a question you definitely don't understand in your technical interview. Anybody interviewing you will smell the bull you're trying to shovel. Be honest facing a question you actually can't answer. You'll be doing yourself a favor by coming clean and the interviewer will see that you're truthful even during a stressful circumstance.

4. Don't Fear the Reaper- That individual sitting down across from you isn't out to get you. Except if you blatantly offended him or her they are most likely very happy to be speaking with you. Don't get defensive or personal in this scenario. The questions could be hard but don't throw a temper tantrum during your technical interview. Be like Fonzie and keep your cool. Likewise try not to hit on them either. Might not work out to your great advantage.

5. Rest, Eat Right, Blah Blah- You've probably heard the propaganda about getting adequate rest and ingesting well before a big examination a long time before looking through this article. Well there's a reason for that and it's called it works. An entire night's sleep and also a hearty meal can easily enhance brain capabilities yadda yadda yadda. You know facts about it so simply do that for your forthcoming technical interview.

A technical interview may appear nerve-racking but it's just one single more hoop to jump through on your journey to that future work. Truly the most significant thing will be to take it easy and maintain your cool. Being tranquil under stress is a good indication you could cope with awkward cases and you can function when the going gets tough. Merely relax and you're already on your journey to pass that technical interview.

how long would it take for Waterway to get back to me for a 2nd job interview please read!?

ok so i got an interview with waterway and the manager told me it was a 2 interview process and my first interview went well. So that was this recent sat so its only been not even a day but i just was wondering how long it would take for his higher up to want to hire me so should i wait a few days until they call me or should i just call them in like 3 days or something i just wanna double check thanks!

You can always call them if they don't call you. It never hurts and usually shows that you're interested.

Locate Your Next Job – On LINKEDIN??

My grandfather used to say there were definitely some things we "young ones" could teach "seasoned professionals".  This statement still rings true.  Once again, the younger generation has taken on the teacher role.  Recent grads are showing us that social media can play a key role in our job hunts.  While we're out beating the streets, newspapers in hand, going from business to business in search of our next job, the next generation is just as busy searching, EXCEPT they're doing all their "legwork" with their fingers – online. 

Networking is not a new term.  Job seekers have used networking strategies for decades to help locate opportunities.  We call relatives to see if there are openings within their companies.  We email former colleagues and classmates to see if their current employers are hiring.  It's time to take our networking skills to the next level, utilizing social media sites like LinkedIn as vital tools to our job searches.  Social networking allows you to immediately tap into your friends, former co-workers' and family members' rolodexes.  There, you can research and dig for company contact information without having to interact directly with another human being.  Many employers are also using social media to browse for new talent.

So, how do you get started?

 

  1. The first thing you need to do is determine what type of job you're looking for and the locations where you'd like to work.  Review your skill set and determine what you enjoy doing, i.e. what gets your blood pumping.  Once you determine the type of job you want, do a keyword search on LinkedIn for job functions, industries, titles and locations that match what you're looking for.  Review this information thoroughly, then complete your LinkedIn profile, including information that matches the job category of your choice.  It is imperative that your profile be thorough.   Include current and past employment, education, industry and web sites.  Also include all you resume keywords and significant experience in your profile so potential employers can find you.  Get recommendations from people with whom you've worked.  These carry a lot of weight.  Lastly, research the companies that interest you to determine if they provide the culture, atmosphere and opportunities you're looking for.  Once you drill down and determine the companies where you'd like to work, locate the hiring people at those companies on LinkedIn.
  2. Step 2 involves an advanced search on LinkedIn.  You've located the hiring people at your companies of choice.  LinkedIn refers to these people as your 2nd degree network – i.e. the decision makers.  Now, you need to find your 1st degree network contacts – your contacts who can introduce you to the 2nd degree network.  Once you locate these individuals, send them your CV or resume and ask them to introduce you by email to the 2nd degree contact(s).  The hiring person will be more likely to speak or meet with you if you are introduced by someone they already know and trust. 
  3. When you meet with the hiring person, DON'T ASK FOR A JOB!!  This puts the hiring authority on the defense and applies instant tension to the situation.  Instead, ask for career advice and direction.  Let him/her know you are very impressed with what they've done with their career and that you would value their guidance regarding our own.  This removes the tension and pressure and allows for open dialogue; giving you an opportunity to showcase your abilities and share your goals, while giving the hiring person the opportunity to get to know you and determine if you are a match for potential openings.  Even if a job is not offered, you have made a contact that you can continue to develop over time – a contact with connections not just with his/her current employer, but with many others.
