Why Do Employers Rarely Reply To Job Applications?

I live on Merseyside and can't find an office job. Employers rarely reply to my applications. It is very depressing!

My sister does human resources (HR) for a few companies. She puts out the ads on Monster.com, and then gets the applications. Sometimes she can get over a hundred applications for one opening. But she does try to reply that she received the app.

However, she tells me that most HR people do NOT reply unless there is any chance that the applicant will get the job.

So...if you aren't getting responses, that is your big clue that you need to re-write your resume. Something about it, isn't getting employers' attention.

The other thing, is try getting a job the old fashioned way: don't send in a resume for a job you found on the Internet. Go to the kinds of places you think you would like to work, knowing what kind of work you would like to do, introduce yourself, and see if you can talk to someone about what they look for in new hires.

The best piece of job hunting advice I ever got went like this: go to the place you most want to get hired, and check the place out. See how the people dress, where they go or what they eat for lunch (go during lunch time) and what they are chatting about. Then leave, armed with all your notes, go home, and figure out how to make yourself "look" like the rest of the people who work there. Then call and make an appointment, and when you get there, and you are dressed like them, and talk like them, you will just "seem to fit in."

In the sources below, I've put in two links. One to jobs in your area, and one that has lots of info and help on resumes.

By the way, my sister the HR person? She used to send out between 75 and 150 resumes to get a job. (Now she works for herself.) Don't forget those odds. It helps to know that the successful job applicants are sending out that many!

How To Follow Up With An Employer For A Vacant Job.

Can an employer ask job applicants for their social security number on a job application? Why or why not?

What can and cannot be asked on a job application? Sources?

Yes, they use it to do a background check on applicants. Also, they can verify with social security whether or not you are authorized to work in the U.S.

Can not ask your date of birth (they have to have you call the background checking company and give it to them). Can not ask if you are married, single or divorced. Can not ask you health related questions (unless you are applying for research or doctor's office).
