Where to Teach English Abroad?
The first thing that most people who want to teach English abroad consider is the big question of which country to choose. While English classes are in demand all over the world not every country makes a good or even feasible destination. This article looks at the factors that need to be taken into account in order to make the right decision.
Before everything else you need to know if you can work in the country or area legally. Many do teach English abroad illegally without any problems but that does of course depend where you go. In places where laws and bureaucracy are strict and enforced like Saudi Arabia going down anything other than the official route should be out of the question. For US citizens getting papers to work legally in Western Europe is a long and arduous. For many it will simply be an impossibility. Contact the relevant embassy to check your status before making any further plans.
The obvious place to start is with the job itself. Are their teach English abroad jobs available in the country? The English language is needed by school children, business people, housewives and almost everyone else around the globe but countries where it is not the first or a leading language are without doubt the ones you should target. For example, English is widely spoken in India so getting work teaching English as a foreign language will not be easy.
As a novice teacher you will be at a clear disadvantage when applying so a saturated job market where there are already a good number of seasoned teachers is going to make it much more difficult finding employment. If you are set on going to places like Tokyo, Paris or Rome and other ESL favorites you should need to allow more time to find work.
To check the availability of ESL jobs visit a few of the teach English abroad websites that post vacancies on job boards. Classifieds are usually by country or region which makes checking quick. Also sign up to one of the many ESL forums. Here you can post queries which will be answered by teachers already working in the areas. This is a great way to get first hand and up to date info.
Pay is not on most people's list of priorities at least not in the initial stages. But there is no escaping the fact that you will need enough to live on. This is of course relative to local costs of living. A job that pays only a few dollars an hour may be enough to get by on if you living in a village in the Peruvian outback but won't cover your costs if you are renting an apartment in downtown Lima. It pays (excuse the pun) to find out about the cost of living in comparison to local salaries. Again, make good use of ESL forums and find out what to expect from people who know.
The other key factor to consider is the standard of living. If you are going to poorer regions like most places in South America you may be in for a bit of a shock. Most people who teach English abroad in such places want to get away from western life and influence but the reality can be tough to adapt to. If you are giving classes in businesses as many do, then you will need to spend at least a couple of hours a day travelling on public transport. Often slow, uncomfortable and without air conditioning this can be tough. Your apartment may well not have a washing machine or worse still it may not be safe to go out after dark in some areas. Research the area fully before you make a final decision.

Sure you can. But you'll need to meet the local requirements for being a teacher. Obviously these will vary from country to country. Private schools may have lesser requirements than public ones.
