Afghan Hound Breed Facts

With its unmistakeable profile, and glamorous looks the Afgan Hound is a standout among dog breeds.

These impressive dogs can be as tall as 29 inches at the shoulder and commonly weigh up to 58 pounds. They have an impressive coat that is long, sleek and lustrous. Any color is permitted within the breed standard, although white markings are not allowed.

The face also has a black 'mask', while some dogs sport a long mandarin-style moustache called, unsurprisingly, a mandarin. As the name suggests, the breed originated in Afghanistan where they were used for hunting small game. They were originally introduced to the west in the 19th century, but by the end of the First World War had all but disappeared.

The dogs we know today virtually all descend from a group imported to Scotland in the 1920’s. These dogs quickly became star performers at many dog shows, and soon gained recognition from the kennel clubs in all major English-speaking countries.

Despite its appearance the Afghan has much in common with the wolf, is closely related to the original domestic dogs, and is considered an ancient dog breed. The Afghan is not your typically eager-to-please pet. They can be quite aloof, and economical with their affection. They also can be hard to train, despite being quite intelligent dogs.

They’ve even been described as cat-like, because of their ability to totally blank you out. Put it this way, if you want an Afghan to obey your command, you’d better give him a good reason to.

That aside, the Afghan is still an excellent pet that forms close bonds with its immediate human 'pack'. They just take a while to accept strangers, and will usually ignore someone who hasn't earned their trust.

Despite their athletic profile, Afghans can be first-class couch potatoes. They love curling up and dozing on the couch and will do it for hours if you let them.

Once outdoors though, the breeds strong hunting instincts kick in. You'll notice that the dog is suddenly on full alert for prey, and he'll chase any small animal he sees. The Afghan may look glamorous, but it is no softie. These are strong healthy dogs who have very few serious health problems. The major health issues relate to the eyes, with cataracts a particular problem.

Grooming an Afghan is a labor intensive job. The coat needs daily brushing to keep it looking its best and will also have to be trimmed by a professional groomer every once in a while.

Although the Afghan is a hunting dog, it much prefers the luxury of indoor living to sleeping outdoors. Anyway, the dog is not equipped for outdoor living as the coat offer very little protection from the elements.
